Five Minute Monday – What Are Blue Whales So Enormous?

This week, we have a very interesting TedEd video on whales. It’s written and animated as if it’s aimed at children or young adults, but it’s actually interesting enough for anyone.

For instance, the largest Blue Whales are the length of a basketball court. But they feed exclusively on Krill (tiny shrimp-like creatures). In a single bite, the whale consumes 450,000 calories worth of Krill. That’s unbelievable.

And scientists have done the math to calculate what the maximum size of an animal can be based on the way the whale eats. It’s all fascinating stuff. Have a look!
